Accurate flash point determination is essential for safety, product classification and regulatory compliance across industries handling fuels, lubricants, chemicals and solvents. Reliable results depend on both validated test methods and the use of appropriate certified reference materials (CRMs) for instrument calibration and / or verification.
ARO Scientific has extended its range of flash point CRMs with the introduction of CRM-COC35 and CRM-PMCC35, providing additional options at temperatures for both Cleveland Open Cup (COC) and Pensky-Martens Closed Cup (PMCC) methods.
Flash point methods such as Cleveland Open Cup (ASTM D92) and Pensky-Martens Closed Cup (ASTM D93) require routine verification using certified reference materials. These materials provide traceable reference values used to confirm instrument performance.
For effective calibration and / or verification, the CRM selected should be close to the expected flash point of the test samples. Using materials significantly outside the working range may increase uncertainty and reduce confidence in reported results.
The addition of CRM-COC35 extends the lower end of the Cleveland Open Cup calibration range.
Available Cleveland Open Cup CRMs
| Part Number | Nominal Flash Point (°C) | Matrix |
|---|---|---|
| CRM-COC10 | ~85 °C | Mineral Oil |
| CRM-COC20 | ~125 °C | Mineral Oil |
| CRM-COC30 | ~160 °C | Mineral Oil |
| CRM-COC35 | ~200 °C | Mineral Oil |
| CRM-COC40 | ~250 °C | Mineral Oil |
This expanded range allows laboratories to select a calibration material more representative of flash point samples, improving the relevance of calibration and / or verification checks.
The CRM-PMCC35 extends the Pensky-Martens Closed Cup range in a similar manner.
Available Pensky-Martens Closed Cup CRMs
| Part Number | Nominal Flash Point (°C) | Matrix |
| CRM-PMCC10 | ~80 °C | Mineral Oil |
| CRM-PMCC20 | ~105 °C | Mineral Oil |
| CRM-PMCC30 | ~140 °C | Mineral Oil |
| CRM-PMCC35 | ~190 °C | Mineral Oil |
| CRM-PMCC40 | ~230 °C | Mineral Oil |
This provides an additional calibration point for laboratories working flash point materials using closed cup methods.
ARO Scientific flash point CRMs are produced in accordance with recognised requirements for reference materials, providing traceability and well-characterised values suitable for method verification.
An extended CRM range supports laboratories in:
In routine testing, laboratories often encounter a wide range of sample types and flash points. Access to CRMs across a broader temperature range enables more appropriate calibration selection and strengthens confidence in results, particularly for specification or compliance-critical measurements.
The introduction of CRM-COC35 and CRM-PMCC35 extends ARO Scientific’s flash point CRM range to lower temperatures, enabling improved alignment between calibration materials and test samples. This supports accurate measurement, reduced uncertainty and continued compliance with international standards.
